1. Coagulation and Flocculation

  • Coagulation: Chemicals like alum are added to the water to cause small particles to stick together and form larger particles (floc).
  • Flocculation: The water is gently stirred to encourage the floc particles to bind together into larger clusters.

2. Sedimentation

  • The floc particles, which are now heavier, settle to the bottom of a large tank through the process of gravity. This step removes the larger particles from the water.

3. Filtration

  • After sedimentation, the water is passed through filters made of sand, gravel, and other materials to remove smaller particles and remaining impurities.

4. Disinfection

  • To kill or inactivate harmful microorganisms, disinfection is carried out using chemicals like chlorine or ultraviolet (UV) light.

5. Storage and Distribution

  • After treatment, the clean water is stored in tanks or reservoirs before being distributed to consumers via a network of pipes.

Additional Processes:

  • pH Adjustment: In some cases, chemicals are added to adjust the pH of the water to prevent corrosion in pipes and other issues.
  • Fluoridation: Some plants add fluoride to the water to help prevent tooth decay.
